You can book a Zipcar in either country just as easily as you can from home, but there are a few differences in how the vehicles work and what is included with your reservation. The information below will help you prepare for your trip.
Starting your reservation
United States: Most reservations can be started using the Zipcar app. A Zipcard is optional but can be brought as a backup if your phone loses signal or battery.
Canada: Many cars in Canada still require a Zipcard to start the reservation. Some newer cars support app unlock, but this is not guaranteed, so please bring your Zipcard.
Where to find the keys
For push to start vehicles, the key fob stays inside the car and you do not need it to start or stop the engine. For vehicles with a traditional bladed key, it is usually tethered to the steering column, but if it is not visible in US vehicles, check the cup holder, glove compartment or door pockets.
Reporting damage
There is no damage log inside the car in the United States or Canada. If you notice damage before you drive, please call 1 866 4ZIPCAR.
Distance allowances
Daily distance allowances vary by country, membership plan and vehicle type. Please check your reservation confirmation or the US and Canada mileage help centre pages for the exact allowance and overage rates.
Fuel card in the sun visor
The fuel card is located in the driver side sun visor in both countries. After refuelling, make sure you put the fuel card back in the visor.
Toll roads
Some roads require a toll, and many Zipcars are equipped with toll passes so you can use automated toll lanes. There is no additional fee for using the pass and your account will be charged separately for the tolls you incur.
Crossing borders
You can drive freely between the United States and Canada. You cannot drive into Mexico, as Zipcar insurance does not provide cover for driving there.
